All About Nina

  • 97 min
  • Gala
A young, stand-up comedian flees to Los Angeles to escape her disastrous ex and prepares for a prospectively life-changing audition.
About The Film

Nina is sharp-tongued and emotionally damaged, two traits that provide her ample material as a stand-up comedian. Unable to disentangle from her abusive ex, she sets off for Los Angeles to audition for a coveted spot on a comedy show. Getting into the local scene, she meets Rafe, a charismatic man who appears to have his head on straight, which confuses Nina to no end. If Nina wants to get right, it will mean confronting her traumas head on instead of making them part of her act.

Writer/director Eva Vives threads humor and warmth through the dark and caustic atmosphere, crafting an impressive tone all her own. As the titular Nina, Mary Elizabeth Winstead is a force, comfortable with sex-forward banter and a mic in her hand, and twisting with the demons she continues to follow.
