Linh, a young woman who lost her family to war, takes a housemaid position at a plantation in the remote woods of French Indochina in 1953. Surprised by the revelation that the surrounding grounds are the resting place of a large number of previous workers, Linh’s sleep is disrupted by nightmares. She finds unexpected comfort in the arms of the handsome and widowed owner, Sebastian – until his dead wife seemingly emerges to object.
This haunting gothic tale blends surprisingly bold eroticism with a pervasive sense of dread, offering a captivating update on the classic horror romance. Derek Nguyen, in his directorial debut, adroitly handles sumptuous visuals and memorable scares, while building a mystery that explores the fully realized characters as well as the questionable colonial history of the locale.
